FORMAT PhotoForum: Alys Tomlinson in conversation with Louise Fedotov-Clements

Join us for the In Conversation PhotoForum with acclaimed photographer Alys Tomlinson and FORMAT Patron Louise Fedotov-Clements. Together they will focus on  on Tomlinson’s career, working as a professional photographer from ideas to publishing and her latest body of work Gli Isolani, which explores the lives of islanders in modern-day Italy, capturing the little-known rituals and traditions inspired by paganism, fables and folklore.

Using analogue film with a large format plate camera, Tomlinson creates extraordinary, almost mythical images, set against wild and rugged landscapes. This series provides a connection between people and place providing a rich visual language that reflects the complex history and cross-cultural influences that these lands have experienced. The images blur the boundaries between fiction and reality, artifice and nature and provides a mediation on place, faith and identity.

The talk coincides with the exhibition Gli Isolani on show at HackelBury Fine Art from 7 September – 29 October 2022. The book Gli Isolani will be published in the autumn by GOST Books with an essay by Sabrina Mandanici.
