Saturday Girl

For the last five years Casey Orr has photographed young women with a touring pop-up studio in 14 towns and cities across Britain. Each Saturday, traditionally a day of meeting and socialising in public spaces, she invited young women to have their portraits taken. Saturday Girl is a contemporary, playful and celebratory collection of portraits about the styles, tribe identities and desires of youth.

The series shows the visual ways in which different UK identities can be read through style and self-expression and how this visual narrative has transformed over the five years of the project.

There is a long history of the way we dress up for the weekend, a history of promenading ourselves and our fashion that we can still see in our social spaces every Saturday. This is a time and opportunity for many young women to present themselves as they wish to be seen, beyond the confines of weekday responsibilities, institutions and family.

The resurgence in feminism with campaigns like #MeToo and #TimesUp have created a culture where Saturday Girl has become part of the conversation about what it means to be a woman today.

Casey Orr will bring her pop-up portrait studio to FORMAT19 inviting girls to be photographed as part of this touring project.
