Exhibition Exploration: Kensuke Koike

For this latest instalment of QUAD/ FORMAT Exhibition Explorations, Senior Curator Peter Bonnell, at home in Derby, is joined by the artist Kensuke Koike, calling in from Tokyo, Japan.

Koike’s exhibition Happy Ending, commissioned for FORMAT19, featured large-scale steel-backed versions of his signature cut-out works, based on archival photographs from the collection of W.W. Winter – a photography studio in Derby since 1852.

One of the world’s oldest studios W.W. Winter’s archive is a treasure trove that Koike gleefully delved into for his installation. As with much of his work Koike rejuvenated his source material, consequently giving both the people that appear in the images and the actual photograph a new sense of purpose, a sense of rebirth.

As the artist himself comments, he has taken these images and “given them a new life, a new story and now a new result.”

Happy Ending was curated by Louise Fedotov-Clements and Peter Bonnell.
