FORMAT University of Derby Graduate Awards
The FORMAT Graduate Award is given to University of Derby Graduates from the BA Photography and BA Commercial Photography courses, each selected for their outstanding work and pushing the boundaries of contemporary art practice. This year’s recipients are Dean Barker, Dominic Chapman, Carl Harness, Rachel Hulson, Ruth Sneesby and Luke Williams.
Each of the artists has used photography to interrogate issues and find methods of communicating their ideas and concerns to a broader audience.
Adopting the aesthetics of contemporary product advertising, Ruth Sneesby comments on society’s throwaway waste culture whilst provoking us to question the environmental effect of our plastic footprint.
Inspired by his deep philosophical research, Dominic Chapman’s carefully constructed installation explores our interpretation of time and space through a sensory experience reconfigured for the gallery space.
Carl Harness’ scientific approach to photography provides understanding of how and why the body moves through his capturing of complex bio-mechanical movements practiced in TaeKwon-Do.
Luke Williams’ hand printed chromogenic analogue prints act as a personal visual reflection of changes within his family dynamic and the transition of his family home.
Through a combination of performance and installation, Rachel Hulson physically and metaphorically presents the cycle of her diabetes and the reality of related symptoms and medication.
Dean Barker encapsulates the beauty of life and death through practicing the early photographic techniques of wet plate collodion.
The FORMAT Graduate Award exhibition is at QUAD’s Extra Gallery Spaces from the 20th October to the 10th November with a special opening event on the evening of Saturday 19th October from 6:00 pm.
