Francis Augusto: Ghost Notes

Project statement: “Ghost Notes explores how punk culture endures in Derby as a historical movement and a living, breathing force that continues to shape the city’s cultural landscape. Through intimate portraits and oral histories, the project examines how punk’s ethos of creative resistance and DIY culture has evolved across generations while maintaining its core values.Working with medium-format film cameras, I photograph participants in spaces significant to Derby’s punk narrative, from historic venues to community print workshops and private archives. These aren’t just documentation sessions but extended conversations that allow stories to unfold naturally, reflecting punk’s emphasis on authentic human connection over polished presentation. The project reveals that punk functions as more than music or aesthetics—it’s a complex social ecosystem where people create meaning through shared practices and beliefs. By focusing on figures like Maggie, whose print workshops have fostered creativity for decades, and Glyn, who preserves the scene’s history in his basement museum, Ghost Notes examines how punk’s spirit of independence and community-building persists through individual actions and shared spaces.

Commissioned by FORMAT Festival and QUAD for their “Dancing Through Time” initiative, this work combines photography and audio documentary to explore how subcultures shape local identities, challenge societal norms, and champion accessibility and innovation in the arts.”
