PhotoForum: In Conversation with Uzoma Chidumaga Orji

FORMAT Producer, Debbie Cooper and FORMAT Coordinator, Niamh Treacy will be in conversation with artist Uzoma Chidumaga Orji, discussing his work Welcome to Instaland which is on display at QUAD, Derby until September 5th 2021 as part of FORMAT21 Presents, at virtual FORMAT21.

Uzoma’s talk will touch upon the need to interrogate fictions presented as fact, the importance of dreamwork and the role we all play in making the world(s) we want to see, as well as his work in designing embodied virtual spaces.

Uzoma Chidumaga Orji is a creative technologist and visual/digital/web artist from Nigeria. His work is engaged with observing and creating representations of society and of history as visual metaphors that explore post-colonial crises of identity.

Through his work he explores how digital technologies can be used as tools to access ancestral truths in the present day. By reconsidering the notions of the digital, Uzoma builds and envisions new digital worlds inspired by Africa and the African diaspora.

Welcome to Instaland is a visual meditation on social media and the relationship artists have with it. What would Instagram look like if it was a city, with a citizenry of artists and creatives? In an age where the artistic landscape is moulded by platform dynamics, Welcome to Instaland seeks to ask pertinent questions about the future of creativity and by extension, of humanity.
