Young FORMAT is a collection of exhibitions produced by the educational outreach programme organised and supported by QUAD.
Temporary is an exhibition by students from Horizons 6th Form and St Martin’s School who have worked with photographer David Wilson Clarke to learn new photographic skills and to create work in response to an exhibition brief provided by QUAD.
The group were asked to capture “things that are temporary” and challenged to think about how they could tell a story though their images.
The project is part of a year-long photography programme with QUAD, as part of the Derby Opportunity Area STEAM agenda funded by Derby City Council and the Department for Education.
The Young FORMAT Open Call exhibition has been curated by QUAD’s Young Advocates, a group of creative producers, decision makers and reviewers, aged 16-25, who work with QUAD staff and artists to shape and influence QUAD’s image based programme.
The project asked young people under the age of 25 to submit their photos of their home and family; local community; spaces they enjoyed spending time in; favourite belongings and items they use on a daily basis.

Sixteen in Residence is a photographic project run with students from Horizons 6th Form, St Andrew’s and St Martin’s Schools who have been working with London-based photographer Kate Peters to explore portrait photography. The students have used a range of photographic and creative techniques to make and reimagine their own self-portraits.
The project is part of a programme of engagement with the SIXTEEN project funded by Arts Council England, and also forms part of a two-year School in Residence programme funded by Paul Hamlyn Foundation.
Ordinary//Joy is an exhibition by QUAD’s Young Creatives, a group of young people, aged 14–19, who work with QUAD staff and artists to respond to QUAD’s exhibition themes to create their own artwork with fresh interpretations and visions.
The group have worked with local photographer David Severn to create an exhibition that responds to the FORMAT19 theme of FOREVER//NOW, looking at the ordinary, mundane and familiar, and reimagined these subjects by contrasting and layering fleeting moments from both the past and present.
The result is a celebration of our simplest and ordinary pleasures, gifts of the mundane and the joy of the familiar.
Participation
FORMAT also produces activity packs to support children and young people to explore the exhibitions, highlighting some of the artists featured across the festival. Both are free to download below, and hard copies of the Children’s Photo Reporter Pack are available at QUAD Shop for £2.00 (while limited stocks last):
