Juan Orrantia was born in Colombia and is based in Johannesburg. He holds an MFA in Photography from Hartford Art School’s International limited residency program having previously gained a PhD in Visiual Anthropology from Yale.
Juan Orrantia makes photographic works concerned with questions of representation, perception and history. For this he explores different modes of photographically interacting with color, interventions and the photobook.
His work has been recognized by collectors and institutions including the Smithsonian Museum of African Art, The Tierney Foundation, Biblioteca de Arte Fundação Calouste Gulbenkian, and has received prizes for his books including from the Fotografia de Montevideo.
