Rethinking Eastern Europe is a collective of visual artists exploring the notion of the “Eastern Bloc”, challenging misconceptions, stereotypes and views associated with the region. In May 2024, the Rethinking Eastern Europe project first came together in London for a cultural event initiated and curated by Zula Rabikowska. The evening featured a dynamic blend of exhibition, film screenings, and a symposium, bringing together 18 visual artists from Poland, Romania, Ukraine, Hungary, Russia, Bulgaria, Germany, Denmark, the UK, and the USA, all engaged with common themes inspired by the Eastern European region. The event’s success and impact inspired the group to form a collective of diverse contemporary visual artists dedicated to further exploring and sharing work, challenging the concept of “Eastern Europe” today.
At the Format25 Photobook Market, a selection of publications by Rethinking Eastern Europe will be on display. Featuring artists: Ania Ready, Hanna-Katrina Jedrosz, Katerina Kouzmitcheva, Katie McCraw, Ksenia Kazintseva, Lacra Grozavescu, Marcelina Amelia, Nastja Nefjodov, Paulina Korobkiewicz, Vera Hadzhiyska, Zula Rabikowska.
