Dreamatorium

Dreamatorium is a project which presents vernacular photographs from Poland’s Communist period, collaged with Western supermarket catalogues to create a series of uncanny hybrid imagery.

The photos combine familiar and nostalgic images of happy families with raw pieces of red meat.  Meat has a symbolic history in Polish culture and the fear of hunger and food shortages caused by war, remain prevalent in the collective social memory.

“While working on this project, dealing with all things scary and hazy, I was attempting a revision of the world seen from the perspective of a child. The project is a dreamy fictional diary combining the concept of nostalgia for old times with a current fear of impending doom,” Paulina Otylie Sury revealed to the British Journal of Photography.
