W W Winter Heritage Trust
Winter’s the photographers on Midland Road, is not only a Derby institution, but is of national, if not international significance. For over 170 years, it has documented the story of the city. Its longevity makes it almost unique amongst commercial photographers and this visual representation and documentation of an urban, industrial and diverse community needs to be preserved for future generations. This remarkable continuity, combined with an ethos of ‘make-do-and
mend’ has resulted in an extraordinary collection of photographic props, cameras and ephemera which are all original and preserved within the context of a purpose-built studio complex.
The W W Winter Heritage Trust exists to preserve and make accessible this important historical ‘gem’ and to become a vehicle to preserve key photographic skills and techniques to inspire the next generation of photographers. The Trust is also developing a varied programme of engagement activities and events picked from the collection of over a million images.
The Trust is actively seeking funds to enable these projects and plans to become a reality within the context of our restored Grade II listed studio building. They will enable Winter’s to move into the next phase of its journey at the heart of the community and to become an increasingly important element in the educational, cultural and artistic offering within the region.
